Hollow

Laughter spills from every room,
we dress the night in cheap perfumes;
we raise the glass and drink: to letting go

The skyline gleams in glass and chrome,
we call this corner of it home,
the spotlight keeps us warm enough for now

We are born too old

Drunk in the backseat,
world lying at our feet,
dreams so loud
they drown out
our heartbeats

Our futures so bright,
dance through the night,
then why do I feel so
hollow

Wearing the smile they sold to me,
a twisted kind of luxury;
a velvet tie that strangles me alive

The days are sweet, but taste the same,
I swear there's sugar in the rain,
a poison, tender but addictive
covering up the bitterness

We are born too old

Drunk in the backseat,
world lying at our feet,
dreams so loud
they drown out
our heartbeats

Our future’s so bright,
dance through the night,
then why do I feel so
hollow

I walk through life with borrowed light,
while others burn to keep theirs bright;
their struggle leaves me doubting mine

I long to speak, to find my voice,
but silence seems the sincere choice
the world needs more than I can give

Drunk in the backseat,
world lying at our feet,
dreams so loud
they drown out
our heartbeats

Our future’s so bright,
dance through the night,
then why do I feel so
hollow
